Adirondack Boathouse

Meticulous woodwork and out-of-the-box design inspired this Adirondack-style boathouse and entertainment pavilion.

Behind each birch twig and pine floorboard is the spirit of a hundred skilled workmen.

- Homeowners

Inspired by the rustic beauty of traditional hunting camps.

The owners of this private boathouse wanted to create a structure inspired by the old Adirondack camps of northern New York, as a perfect complement to their rustic boating and hunting lifestyle.

The art of appearing natural.

A trademark of Adirondack style is the use of unfinished materials like tree trunks and bark-on wood. So we sourced beautiful raw wood—red cedar from British Columbia, and white cedar from the heart of the Adirondacks in New York—painstakingly choosing each tree by hand. Taking great care to protect their natural appearance, they were halved and hollowed out to conceal the building’s steel infrastructure. Chinked and dressed by hand, they hide any hint of cuts. Even a complete sprinkler system appears invisible from below, hidden in the nooks and crannies of the branches.

Maintaining the natural look.

To safeguard the unusual materials used on this construction, our maintenance team was educated in Adirondack architecture, and taught how to repair the unfinished wood. We also care for the living lichen dressing the 36-foot fireplace, which requires special watering twice a year.
