Nor-Son created an inviting new home out of an aging lake cabin using green design and thoughtful building methods.
Incorporating a new design into the existing home proved to be a major challenge. One solution was to cantilever the upper floor structure slightly to create a new, larger loft space. With its gently curved balcony, the space is now even more visually appealing and architecturally interesting.

Nor-Son worked hard to preserve the quaint allure and Northwoods flair that the owners loved while creating an open space better suited for entertaining family and friends. It was of the utmost importance to update the cabin without erasing its rich history and unique character.
A green building strategy that honored the cabin’s original character.
During demolition of the cabin we found perfectly preserved Douglas fir in the rafters. Reusing it for window headers, sub-fascia, and hand-framed portions of the roof allowed the owners to further preserve the quaint attributes of the old cabin. The complicated tongue and groove of the knotty alder ceiling required great precision and accuracy to craft. The extra care paid off; it now provides a beautiful sight within the home.

Seamlessly integrating new elements into an old structure was one of our greatest feats in rebuilding the cabin. A primary design focus and main focal point in the cabin's living and dining areas was a full masonry fireplace that the owners wanted to make more prominent. The new roofline exposed a portion of the fireplace that was filled with stone to perfectly match the existing construction; even an expert eye couldn't detect where old meets new.
