Historic Log Renovation
Nor-Son restored a piece of Bay Lake history and helped set the stage where family adventures can come to life once again.
The greatest challenge we faced was in installing mitered log frames during the window and door phase of the restoration. Since the cabin settled over time, each window had to be custom crafted to fit perfectly into place in a non-square window.
- HomeownersA 90-year-old log cabin worth saving.
After purchasing the 1933 log cabin that had been in disrepair for years, the clients’ primary goal was to renovate the cabin to modern standards while keeping its unique historical charm intact.
Breathing new life into an old Minnesota cabin.
The kitchen and master bedroom were swapped to enhance the flow between the kitchen, dining, and living room areas. During this process interior walls had to be carefully moved and other spaces needed to be patched with new logs. The work required artisan craftsmen to bring back the cabin’s historical charm; for example, wood grain was painstakingly hand-painted onto new logs to correspond perfectly with the cabin’s original knife-drawn logs.
Solving 50 year-old problems.
The basement had been flooded with 3’ of water for over 50 years due to increased lake water levels by the DNR. In order to solve the potential problem of future flooding, Nor-Son brought in 30 cubic feet of sand and poured new concrete, creating a crawl space for mechanical and electrical. Logs in doorframes and walls were hollowed out for new piping to be routed to the crawl space. Previously surface-mounted electrical wiring was hidden by a decorative baseboard surrounding the whole cabin.
